Objectives
The Collaboration Task CT5 focuses on the production of the European Grid Roadmap (EGR), Version 2. The major objective of this document is to give an overview on running and completed EU funded Grid projects, their goals, timelines and priorities. This is important information for the Grid community and gives the EC the opportunity to identify weak and strong development lines in the Grid R&D. To support this identification, the EGR includes a SWOT analysis of the European funded Grid R&D. Further we will integrate relevant output of the technical Groups (TGs) extracted from their whitepapers.
The European Grid Roadmap Group (EGRG) will be responsible for the production of the new version 2.0 based on the previous version 1.1 of the EGR. Once a draft version is available it will be circulated via the EGRG to all European Grid projects and to the leaders of the TGs for fine-tuning. The final version will be published and distributed among the European projects. It will be also spread using the mechanisms of the CoreGRID Spreading Excellence Work Package and the CT2 mechanisms for cross-project dissemination activities.
EGRG document versions
- EGRG document version 2.3 (47 pages, PDF, 2.3 MB)
- EGRG document version 2.1 - preliminary version (16 pages, PDF, 565 KB)
- EGRG document version 1.1 (146 pages, PDF, 1.2 MB)
EGR Core Group
Part of the EGRG is a Core Group (EGRCG) consisting of representatives of these projects that will generate own project roadmaps:. CoreGRID, CHALLENGERS and 3S. It is not intended to produce one single roadmap, but the partners established a strong collaboration to exchange information. These activities are in detail:
CHALLENGERS
This Specific Support Action aims to provide the organizational and administrative framework that will support the gathering and consultation work of a group of experts from the research and business community with well established experience and deep knowledge in the area of Grid technologies. The focus of the consultation work performed by the proposed group of experts will be:
- The Forward Looking Technologies (FLT) related to the Grids, as well as to their association and dependency with the advances of other well established or emerging ICT (Information and Communication Technologies),
- The Vision and Challenges in the area of Grids encountered by the Community for the coming decade,
- The potential impact of the realization of the Vision in the industrial and business sector.
CoreGRID
CoreGRID aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and P2P technologies. To achieve this objective, the Network brings together 119 permanent researchers and 165 PhD students from 42 institutions. An ambitious joint programme of activity will be conducted around 6 complementary research areas that have been selected on the basis of their strategic importance, their research challenges and the recognised European expertise to develop next generation Grid middleware, namely:
- Knowledge & data management;
- Programming models;
- System architecture;
- Grid information and monitoring services;
- Resource management and scheduling;
- Problem solving environments, tools and GRID systems.
3S
3S will support the goals of the IST Priority in developing Joint European Strategy for R&D and Industry in the Software & Services field until year 2020, pushing the EU to a competitive position worldwide by identifying strategies and technologies that will facilitate future developments and reduce fragmentation through the fusion of different scientific and industrial communities and build consensus through network. The main objectives of 3S are to:
- Create Technology Roadmaps concerning S and S based on the information gathered via the active community through Technology Watch and Business Intelligence.
- Deliver two interactive workshops involving international experts forecasting the necessary steps towards achieving specific technology goals; contents will integrate the 3S 2020 joint European strategy.
- Identify technological trends/needs and develop and integrate them into the current and future S and S environment.
- Publish two state-of-the-art reports in S and S, and two comparative reports on European S and S industry applications and markets.
- Identify potential research areas related to S&S looking towards FP7 and national and regional RTD programmes.
The results of 3S will be to promote exploitation of S&S enabling the diffusion of technology results and innovations built on the project and through the 3S International Conference and to develop and implement "3S 2020" into programmes and enable synergies with industry and research linked organisations.
